How does AI manga translation work?
You click a button and a page of Japanese, Korean or Chinese comic turns into your language — bubble by bubble, in a second or two. It feels like magic, but it's four ordinary steps done quickly. Here's what actually happens, in plain English.
Why it's not just "translate this page"
On a normal web page the words are real text: your browser can select them, and a translator can read and swap them. In a manga page the words are drawn into the image — the same as a caption burned into a photo. To your browser it's just pixels. That single fact is why the "translate page" button does nothing to the speech bubbles, and why translating comics needs a different pipeline.
Step 1: Find the text (OCR)
First the software has to see the words. It runs OCR (optical character recognition) — the same family of tech that reads a receipt or a licence plate — but tuned for comics. It has to spot where the text is (inside bubbles, but also captions and asides), then recognise the actual characters, which is hard when the lettering is stylised, hand-drawn, vertical, or tiny. This step is where most of the quality is won or lost: if the OCR misreads a character, everything after it is translating the wrong word.
Step 2: Work out the reading order
People read a page in an order the artist intends, and it isn't the same everywhere. Japanese manga reads right to left; Korean manhwa and Chinese manhua, as webtoons, read top to bottom in a vertical scroll. If the software groups the text in the wrong order, the reply lands before the question and the scene stops making sense while still looking fine. Step 3: Translate with AI — with context
Now the recognised text goes to an AI translation model. The important word is context. Cheap translation does one bubble, or one word, at a time and produces stiff, literal results. A better approach sends the bubbles together, so the model can:
- keep names and terms consistent from panel to panel (so "Lin Xiao" doesn't become "Lin Shao" a chapter later);
- handle honorifics and forms of address that carry the relationships in the story;
- read idioms as idioms — a Japanese set phrase or a Chinese chengyu becomes a natural sentence, not surreal nonsense;
- infer the subject that many languages leave unspoken.
The quality of the model matters here, which is why higher-tier AI produces a noticeably smoother read on tricky material.
Step 4: Put it back on the page
Finally the translation has to go back where the original was, while you keep reading. There are two ways to do it:
- Overlay: the translation is placed on top of each bubble. Fast, and it keeps the original art untouched underneath.
- Clean re-lettering (what MangaLens calls Scanlation mode): the original lettering is digitally erased and the translation is typeset neatly into the bubble, so the page looks natively localised rather than covered with a sticker.

Is AI manga translation accurate?
It's good and getting better, but not perfect. The OCR step can misread stylised or tiny text, and no machine catches every pun, honorific or piece of slang. A strong system reduces the misses by translating whole bubbles with context, keeping names consistent, and detecting reading direction — but treat it as a fast, faithful read, not a flawless official localisation. Can AI translate manga sound effects?
It can, but the better move is usually not to. Sound effects are drawn as art, and turning every one into a full sentence buries the page in text.
